First Year of Our University’s Bioethanol Project has been successfully completed

Yayın Tarihi : 15/05/2019
Within the scope of the Pak-Turk Project-based agreement of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the first year of the project entitled “Cost Effective Pilot Scale Production of Bioethanol” between Bartin University and Government College University Lahore has been successfully completed.

A joint research project on biofuel production between, Pakistan and Bartin University, Bartin, Turkey is being carried out. This project is being executed for 3 years under Pak-Turk Joint Research Program sponsored by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and Council of Higher Education, Turkey. The main objective of the project is the low cost production of bioethanol.

A successful year has been completed, as said by Prof. Ahmet Karadağ, the Dean of Faculty of Science and the principal investigator of the Project, also continued “The Project is successfully continuing as expected. We focused on the cloning and expressions of cellulose and hemicellulose enzymes in the first year. Next year, we will focus on purification and characterization of these enzymes. In addition, large-scale production of the enzymes will be performed.”

Hazelnut shell, hazel nut (cob) and forest wastes to be converted into bioethanol
Bioethanol will be produced using hazelnut wastes and other forest wastes, underlined by Prof. Karadağ, also said “The main idea of this project is to convert the cellulose and hemicellulose found in plant biomass into simple sugars, like glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, and rhamnose. For this purpose, biomass will be pre-treated with alkali, acid or steam. The cellulose and hemicellulose contents will then be treated with cellulase and hemicellulase enzymes produced from the microorganism Clostridium clariflavum. Production of cellulase enzymes will be achieved by gene cloning. Cellulases and hemicellulases convert long chains of cellulose and hemicellulose into simple sugars. The simple sugars produced in this way will then be converted to ethanol using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is a yeast that uses sugar as the carbon source. The ethanol thus produced will be used as a biofuel and will be added to the gasoline. This will help to reduce dependence on oil and reduce environmental pollution.”

A project to add value to national economies
The project is important in terms of economics, Prof. Karadağ said. “Pakistan and Turkey are spending huge amount on import of crude oil. By promoting renewable energy technologies especially biofuel production, both countries can save foreign exchange spent on the import of crude oil. The fossil fuels including crude oil are also spreading environmental pollution which is causing many diseases.”

Student and faculty mobility
Students and faculty from both countries will also benefit from this program. Last year Ms Attia Hamid, PhD scholar, from GC university, Lahore visited Bartin university and performed research work. This year Asst. Prof. Hasan Ufuk Celebioglu from Department of Biotechnology and MSc student Özgenur Dinçer will visit GC University, Lahore, Pakistan in September, 2019.

Principal Investigator from Pakistan side, Dr. Muhammad Nauman Aftab has visited Bartin University, Turkey from 17th April to 16th May, 2019. He along with Prof. Dr. Ahmet Karadag visited the labs of Bartin university where the research regarding this project is being carried out. He discussed various aspects of the project with Prof Ahmet Karadag, who is also Dean of Science in Bartin University. Dr. Nauman has also met with Rector of the university, Prof Dr. Orhan Uzun and discussed further collaboration between GC University, Lahore, Pakistan and Bartin University, Bartin, Turkey.

Furthermore, Dr. Aftab has given lectures about “Renewable Energies”, “Biofuel” and “Recycling” to the students of Department of Biotechnology.
